Abstract

This white paper introduces the concept of an Engineering Service Bureau (ESB), and defines both the business need for ESBs and the benefits of ESBs to distributed organizations. It further details the distinctives of an Engineering Service Bureau, as opposed to generic application service providers, and outlines the technical infrastructure needed by both the clients and the service bureau itself. These concepts are illustrated with examples from U-Engineer.com, a pilot commercial service bureau established by the ProAM Project currently in use by several DoD suppliers.
